Fennellomyces

FENNELLOMYCES Benny & R. K. Benjamin, 1975 (Aliso 8:328); 4 spp. (Benny and Benjamin, 1975; Misra et al., 1979; Mirza et al., 1979).

Species of Fennellomyces produce sporangiophores that bear deliquescent-walled, apophysate sporangia with a subsporangial vesicle. This sporangiophore also forms a few to many apophysate, persistent-walled sporangia on straight to curved or twisted and contorted lateral branches. Zygospores have ornamented and pigmented zygosporangia and opposed suspensors.

Type species: F. linderi

Species of Fennellomyces:
F. gigacellularis J.H. Mirza, S. M. Khan, S. Begum & S. Shagufta, 1979 ( Mucorales of Pakistan, p. 135).
F. heterothallicus P.C. Misra, N.N. Gupta & K. Lata, 1979 (Mycotaxon 10:251).
F. linderi (Hesseltine & Fennell) Benny & Benjamin, 1975 (Aliso 8:328).
F. verticellatus J.H. Mirza, S. M. Khan, S. Begum & S. Shagufta, 1979 ( Mucorales of Pakistan, p. 136).

Four species are known (Benny and Benjamin 1975; Misra et al. 1975; Mirza et al 1979) but at least two more species remain to be described. Many isolates in culture collections should be studied.
